OPEIU Local 30 Executive Board

Executive Director
Walter Allen, Jr.
Walter is the Executive Director/Chief Financial Officer of Local 30. Walter came to Local 30 in 2001 as Trustee from the International Union to aide in the reorganization of Local 30. With more than 20 years of experience, Walter has served as Vice-President on the Executive Council of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, President of the Plymouth-Bristol Central Labor Council and on the Boards of the Old Colony United Way of Massachusetts, the University of Massachusetts Labor Education Center, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Labor Advisory Board, the Martin Institute for Law and Justice at Stonehill College, the Boston Labor Guild and the Labor Relations Institute of Quincy College. He has served two terms as an OPEIU International Vice President from Local 6 in Region II, his third term from Local 30 in Region V and has been elected to serve a fourth term at the OPEIU Convention in 2007.  Walter was first elected as Executive Director/CFO in July of 2002 and took office in October 2002. Walter now participates in the labor community for OPEIU Local 30 in Southern California and Arizona. He serves on the Executive Council of the San Diego – Imperial Counties Labor Council. He created the first ever Shop Steward Training’s for the Unions of the Labor Council. He is a member of the Coalition for Labor Union Women (CLUW), Pride at Work (PAW), and the OPEIU Benefits Trust Fund in Los Angeles. Walter also serves as the chair of the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions in Southern California, sits on the Labor Management Partnership Executive Leadership Council and the National Steering Committee. Walter was recently elected to the Executive Council of the Arizona AFL-CIO. On January 20, 2007 Walter Allen was awarded the “Michael Goodwin” award for outstanding leadership.  This award acknowledges leaders promoting union activities and support not only for their local constituencies but for organized labor at large and the communities it serves.

President
Marianne Giordano
Marianne is the President of Local 30.  Marianne has served on the Executive Board since 1999 and has been a shop steward for 10 years.  She works for Kaiser Permanente as an Echo Technologist in the Internal Medicine Cardiology Department at the San Diego Medical Center where she has been employed for the past 18 years. Marianne currently serves on Kaiser Permanente’s San Diego LMP Council as the Labor co-chair.  She is also active on several committees, Workplace Safety, which she chairs, the Health Connect Steering Committee, and the Education and Training committee. Marianne also serves Local 30 as a Union Partnership Representative (UPR) to promote and support union activities creating and increasing union capacity. On January 20, 2007, Marianne was awarded the “Gwen Newton” award for inspirational leadership.  This award acknowledges those members who give of themselves to motivate and inspire others to excel, and to promote union capacity.

Catherine Young, KP
Cathy is Vice-President of Local 30.  Cathy has served on the Executive Board since 1993 when she was first elected to office and has served as a Shop Steward for the past 16 years.  She is a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) and works at Kaiser Permanente’s La Mesa Primary Care Department. She has worked for Kaiser Permanente for over 30 years. Cathy is also active in the Labor Management Partnership at Kaiser Permanente on various projects and committees.  Cathy also chairs the Local 30 Events Committee, which is responsible for events like the Family Fun Day in San Diego, Day at the Races in Los Angeles, the Local 30 Awards Banquet, the Steward's Holiday Celebration, and others. Cathy oversees the budget for all event activities and manages Local 30's charitable programs and events as well.

Catherine Engler, KP
Catherine is an LVN and works at the Primary Care Department in Carlsbad. She has served as a shop steward to our Local 30 members for the past 15 plus years.  She is involved in Education & Training, Workplace Safety, Systems Of Safety, Attendance and Health Care Teams.

Carmen Corral, KP
Carmen was first elected to the Executive Board in 1988. She has also served as a shop steward for over 20 years. Carmen works for Kaiser Permanente in the Logistics Department as a Senior Truck Driver.  She has worked for Kaiser Permanente since 1974.  She is very active in Kaiser Permanente’s Labor Management Partnership with various committees and projects as well as being a trainer for the Union Partnership Representation classes. Carmen is a dedicated trade unionist who is always committed to the best interests of her Union and its members.

Ruth Porchas, FFFCU
Ruth was elected to office in 2005.  She has been a shop steward for nearly 5 years. Ruth works for First Financial Credit Union in Los Angeles.  She works for Member Support in the Loan Servicing Department.  She has worked for First Financial for 15 years. In addition to her duties as an Executive Board member, Ruth also serves on Local 30’s Communications / Engagement Committee.

Annie Watson, COH
Annie was first elected Trustee in 2000 and has served faithfully ever since. Annie works for the City of Hope as an Ambulatory Registration Representative in the Out Patient Clinic.  She has worked for the City of Hope for more than 15 years. Annie has served the members of Local 30 as a Shop Steward for the past 10 years.  In addition to her duties as Trustee, Annie also serves on the Local 30 Events Committee and the Charity Committee.

Erica DeWar, KP
Erica was elected as a Trustee in 2007. This is a new role for her and she is excited to be participating.Erica works for Kaiser Permanente in the Population Based Medicine department. She has worked for Kaiser Permanente since 1993. She has served as a Contract Specialist with Local 30 and has been a shop Steward since 1995. Erica teaches the UPR classes with the LMP as well as LMPO for Kaiser Permanente.

T. Kathleen Doyle, KP
Katie was elected Senior Trustee in 2002. Katie is a UBT Specialist.  Katie also serves the members of Local 30 as a Shop Steward. Katie currently serves as the co-chair of the Safety Observation Sub-Committee for Workplace Safety at Kaiser Permanente as part of the Labor Management Partnership.  She also serves on the Local 30 Scholarship Committee.

Raleigh Ruff, KP
Raleigh is a customer Support Specialist at KPOC. She has been doing this job over 8 years. Raleigh has been a shop steward over 8 years and she is also the Co-Chair of your LMP Committee and has served on multiple committees and taskforce.

Jan Nikodym, KP
Jan has worked at Kaiser for over 11 years in the Laboratory Department at San Diego Medical Center as a Laboratory Assistant.  She also serves as a shop steward over 3 years.  Jan is involved as a Co-Lead for the Unit Based Teams and a Co-Lead for LMP and is an action member of the Safety Team.
